Hurricane Milton destroys the roof of Tropicana Field

Hurricane Milton hit the Tampa Bay area hard Wednesday night. It tore the roof off of Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., which is home to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Large parts of the roof that doesn’t fold could be seen flapping in the wind.

The Tampa station WFTS-TV said that no one was hurt at the scene.

First responders were using the stadium as a place to stay safe before they went out to help with the storm. On Tuesday, rows of cots were set up on top of the Rays’ fake grass so that emergency workers could use them.

When it first opened in 1990, the place was called the Florida Suncoast Dome. The building was called the Thunder Dome when the Tampa Bay Lightning lived there from 1993 to 1996. Tropicana, a big local drink company, got the name rights for 30 years in 1996.

Hurricane Milton hit land with winds of about 120 mph and a Category 3 rating. It was later lowered to a Category 2 rating.
