Baldock, a defender for Panathinaikos, was found dead in a swimming pool
Police reports say that Panathinaikos and Greece defender George Baldock’s body was found in a swimming pool at his home in the southern Athens suburb of Glyfada on Wednesday. Baldock was born in Britain.
The cause of death was still unknown.
A police officer said that they tried cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the 31-year-old former Premier League player but were not able to bring him back to life.
The death was recorded at 10 p.m. (1900 GMT).
The Greek-born Baldock played 12 times for his country. He moved from Sheffield United to Panathinaikos in May after the English team was relegated from the Premier League.
Not as well known teams like MK Dons and Oxford United also had him on their rosters.
Other English clubs sent their condolences after hearing about the death of a famous player who played for seven years at Bramall Lane. Sheffield United said they were shocked and very saddened.
Baldock played four times for Panathinaikos, including a 0-0 draw with Olympiakos over the weekend, but he wasn’t picked for Greece’s Nations League team that played England at Wembley on Thursday.
England and Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, who used to play for Sheffield United, shared a picture of Baldock on Instagram with the words “RIP” and a broken heart emoji.
“With deep sadness and pain, the national team and the Hellenic Football Federation say goodbye to George Baldock,” the Greek team wrote on Facebook.
“There are no words to describe the pain that hearing about the untimely death of one of our young people has caused.” We need to be quiet right now. We’re sorry for his family’s loss. Sorry for your loss from his second family. “Goodbye.”
