The labor federation leader in Nigeria has been apprehended, according to the union

The president of Nigeria’s main labor federation was apprehended by the state security service on Monday on charges that have not yet been disclosed, according to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Joe Ajero was apprehended just days after he expressed his dissatisfaction with the government’s decision to increase the price of petroleum by 39% and threatened to initiate a strike if the decision was not reversed. Some of the factors for cost-of-living protests in early August were the high prices of fuel.

The NLC reported on X that Ajero was apprehended by officials from the Department of State Security (DSS) at the airport in the capital, Abuja, while attempting to travel to Britain on union business.

The DSS did not provide an immediate response to the matter.

According to analysts, the most recent increase in petroleum prices, which are frequently employed by households and small businesses to operate generators, could exacerbate inflation, which is already in the double digits, thereby exacerbating economic hardship.
