Police in Guinea-Bissau confiscate more than two tons of cocaine that was transported from Venezuela
Police in Guinea-Bissau have confiscated 2.63 tons of cocaine that was discovered on an airplane that arrived in the capital of the West African nation from Venezuela, according to the local judicial police.
According to a police statement, 78 bales of drugs were confiscated by agents during a search on Saturday afternoon at Bissau’s Osvaldo Vieira International Airport. The drugs were smuggled in on a Gulfstream IV aircraft.
All five members of the aircraft’s personnel, including the pilot, were apprehended. It comprised two Mexican nationals, as well as citizens of Brazil, Ecuador, and Colombia.
On Monday, the detainees will be brought before a regional court for interrogation, according to the statement.
In collaboration with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Maritime Analysis and Operations Centre-Narcotics, the police conducted the assault, which was designated “Operation Landing.”
South American cocaine is frequently transported to Europe through West African countries by drug smugglers. At the weekend, the seizure was one of the most significant that has been documented in recent years.
The 2024 U.N. World Drug Report indicates that cocaine is still one of the most commonly used drugs globally, with 23 million consumers.
