86-year-old former Liverpool captain Yeats passes away
Ron Yeats, a former captain of Liverpool and defender for Scotland, passed away on Saturday at the age of 86, the Premier League team announced.
Yeats, who came to Liverpool in 1961 from Scottish team Dundee United, captained the Merseyside giants for eight seasons. The only player to captain the team for more games is Steven Gerrard.
Yeats captained Liverpool to its first FA Cup victory in 1965, and the team won the First Division of the Football League twice under Yeats’ leadership.
According to Liverpool, he recently suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and passed away on Friday night.
“The thoughts of everyone at LFC are with Ron’s wife, Ann, all of his family and his friends at this incredibly sad time,” Liverpool stated in a statement.
