13 people are killed in a mudslide in Phuket, Thailand, including 2 Russians, an official reports
Authorities canceled their search for missing persons on Sunday after confirming that 13 people—including a Russian couple—had perished in a mudslide on Phuket, a popular tourist destination in Thailand.
According to Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat, the mudslides near the Big Buddha, a well-liked tourist site in the south of the country, were caused by heavy rains last week.
According to Sophon, two of the deceased were Thai, and nine of the deceased were migrant laborers from Myanmar in addition to the Russians. The mudslide damaged 209 homes and resulted in about 20 injuries.
The governor stated that a significant cleaning was underway and that the authorities were corresponding with the victims’ families and embassies.
