“Papa Ngwasuma”: Koffi Olomide enters Democratic Republic of Congo politics and says he will run for Senate

Popular Rumba artist Koffi Olomide has announced his intention to get involved in politics.

A popular singer is running for a seat in the Senate of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). His candidacy is planned for Sud-Ubangi province in northwestern Congo, with elections scheduled for April 22.

Olomide, the AFDC-A party representative, wants to win the position through public campaigns and fundraising.

Born Antoine Christophe Agbepa Mumba, Olomide made a significant contribution to Congolese culture. In 2022, he was given the title of Congolese cultural ambassador by President Félix Tshisekedi. He praised the role of President Olomide, emphasizing that his profile is more than that of an artist who benefits the country.

Olomide apparently received a diplomatic passport from Tshisekedi. Following his appointment, he vowed to maintain a reputation that would be an example to African youth. With a career spanning over five decades in the Congolese music industry, Olomide’s political involvement aims to further strengthen Congo’s cultural and artistic economy.
