On Wednesday, train, bus, and ferry services experienced significant disruptions throughout the Netherlands due to a nationwide strike organized by labor unions in protest of proposed welfare cuts.

The action also disrupted international rail connections with Belgium, Germany, France, and Britain, impacting thousands of passengers.

Unions are challenging government proposals to reduce annual welfare spending by up to €6.5 billion ($7.6 billion), with a significant portion of the savings anticipated to arise from limitations on unemployment benefits.

The government asserts that these measures are essential to support a substantial rise in defense expenditure.


The strike occurs as the center-right minority government faces challenges in obtaining parliamentary backing for its policies. In the absence of a majority, the coalition must seek support from opposition parties to successfully pass legislation in both chambers of parliament.

The left-wing Pro party, currently at the forefront of the opposition, has expressed its support for the unions' call for the government to reverse the welfare cuts, thereby intensifying pressure on the coalition.
