52 Singaporeans have been detained in China due to suspected involvement in pyramid scheme activities

Chinese authorities have apprehended 52 Singaporeans in Guangxi on suspicion of involvement in pyramid scheme activities, while Singapore is offering consular support.

Chinese authorities have apprehended 52 Singaporean nationals in Guangxi as part of a law enforcement operation aimed at suspected pyramid scheme activities and associated offenses, stated Singapore’s Second Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sim Ann, on Friday.

Sim stated that Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and police are in communication with Chinese authorities to gather more information regarding the cases and the circumstances of the detentions.

She emphasized that Singapore refrains from intervening in the legal proceedings or investigations of other nations while noting that the government is offering consular assistance to the detained Singaporeans.

Sim noted that Singapore’s embassy in Beijing and Consulate-General in Guangzhou have made three visits to the detainees to assess their welfare and offer assistance.

Officials have also facilitated the communication of requests from those detained, transmitted messages between them and their families, and provided assistance with administrative matters, she stated.


Sim advised Singaporeans to be vigilant when evaluating business and investment prospects, whether locally or internationally.

She specifically cautioned against programs that necessitate participants enlisting others, demand significant initial payments, or guarantee exceptionally high returns.

Sim stated that she was unable to offer additional information regarding the offenses purportedly committed by the 52 Singaporeans.

Meanwhile, Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, stated that Chinese police address criminal cases involving foreign nationals in accordance with Chinese law while also safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of those involved.
