The Patriots have made Christian Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL

After lengthy negotiations, the New England Patriots have finalized a contract extension that positions Christian Gonzalez as the NFL's highest-paid cornerback, according to multiple media outlets late Monday night.

The four-year extension worth $135 million reportedly features $102 million in guaranteed money and a $33 million signing bonus, setting a record for a cornerback.

The agreement positions Gonzalez in front of the Seattle Seahawks' Devon Witherspoon, who accepted a four-year, $132 million extension in mid-August, with $101 million guaranteed.

The Gonzalez deal occurs just two days prior to the highly anticipated season-opening Super Bowl rematch between the Patriots and the Seahawks in Seattle.

Gonzalez, 24, missed two weeks of training camp in August because of a leg injury, but he has returned to full strength for the past two weeks.

A first-round draft pick in 2023 from Oregon, Gonzalez participated in only four games for New England that season due to a right shoulder injury. He came back the next year to record two interceptions, 11 passes defensed, one fumble recovery, and 59 tackles in 16 games, all of which were starts.

Last year, Gonzalez recorded 10 passes defensed and 69 tackles in 14 games, all of which were starts. Throughout the Patriots' postseason journey that culminated in a Super Bowl loss, he recorded one interception, one sack, one forced fumble, seven passes defensed, and 19 tackles across four games.
