Mikel Arteta has put pen to an upgraded deal at Arsenal, tying the Spaniard to the reigning Premier League champions beyond the current campaign.
Arteta’s existing contract was due to run out when this season closes, and discussions about a replacement had dragged on for several months. BBC Sport reported earlier in September that the parties were nearing terms, and it is now understood the manager and the Gunners have settled on a final agreement.
The club has not stated how many years the new deal runs. What is clear is that it carries Arteta into at least a tenth season in charge, counting from his appointment in December 2019.
The revised terms bring a steep raise. Arteta currently earns Sh1.7bn (£10m, about $13.4 million) a year, with a further Sh865m (£5m, roughly $6.7 million) available in bonuses — converted at about $1.34 to the pound.
Asked about the negotiations last week, the manager moved to settle any nerves among the fanbase. “They [the fans] don’t have to worry about any of that because I want to be here,” Arteta said.
