Ben Shelton's loss prolongs the US men's Grand Slam drought

An American men's Grand Slam drought will extend into its 24th year, following German Alexander Zverev's victory over Ben Shelton in the U.S. final. Open on Sunday to the deep disappointment of the home crowd in New York.

Shelton was not even a year old when the last American Grand Slam winner, Andy Roddick, lifted the U.S. Open trophy. Opened trophy in 2003. The golden era of Agassi and Sampras seemed like a fading memory as eighth seed Shelton lost 6-3 7-6(2) 5-7 6-2 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

I apologize, but this year's winner is not the right choice," Zverev stated. “However, I fulfilled my responsibilities.”

Over the past twenty-five years, global tennis has excelled at surpassing the American men.

While Venus and Serena Williams, Sloane Stephens, Coco Gauff, and Madison Keys have been successful in securing titles on the women's side, the U.S. men have seldom reached a championship final.

Roddick made his final appearance in a Wimbledon final in 2009. Another 15 years passed before an American man competed in a title match, as Taylor Fritz faced Italian Jannik Sinner in New York.

Shelton expressed his enthusiasm for experiencing the spotlight once again on tennis' grandest stage.

It's an incredible moment. Stepping onto that court today, there's truly nothing like it. I've never experienced anything quite like that before. Yes, it's an exhilarating feeling to be in situations like this," he shared with reporters.

The USTA previously highlighted Fritz's 2024 campaign as an indication of progress, following the announcement of a significant overhaul to its player development program in 2008. Fritz emerged from USTA camps, alongside Frances Tiafoe, who made it to the semi-finals for the third time this year.

The national governing body of the sport has taken steps to diversify its talent through a partnership announced last year with the American Tennis Association, aiming to enhance Black representation in a predominantly white sport.

Shelton made history simply by stepping onto the court on Sunday as the first Black American man to play in the New York final in 54 years—since Ashe, the man for whom the tournament's showpiece court was named.

I believe I'm still on the journey to becoming the player I aspire to be. However, I consider myself a strong competitor. I feel that I perform exceptionally well in competition on the court," said Shelton.

I can maintain my focus and remain on the court for extended periods. I believe this will benefit me as I move forward in the future.
