Manchester City achieved a thrilling and contentious victory in the Manchester derby against rivals Manchester United, even after being reduced to 10 men for over 70 minutes.

City midfielder Phil Foden received a straight red card for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes, which allowed United to seize control of the match for a period.

United took control following the red card and hit the post twice around the half-time mark, yet City continued to pose a threat on the counter-attack.

The visitors finally found the breakthrough in the 60th minute when Erling Haaland converted Josko Gvardiol’s low, deflected cross at the back post.


Haaland was first indicated as offside, leading to an extensive review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). The check ultimately determined that the Norwegian was onside, while Enzo Fernandez, who was in an offside position, was deemed not to have interfered with play as he reached out to connect with the cross before it arrived at Haaland.

The victory marks City’s flawless beginning to the Premier League season under new manager Enzo Maresca and positions them level on points with Arsenal at the summit of the table.

For United, the loss signifies that they have lost points in three of their first four league matches, placing them 13th in the standings.
