Russians participate in an election that Putin views as a measure of backing for his military actions

Friday marked the start of a three-day parliamentary election in Russia, where President Vladimir Putin claims millions support his forces in Ukraine, despite the ban on anti-war candidates. The State Duma election, the first since Russia's full-scale conflict in Ukraine in February 2022, is projected to maintain the pro-Putin United Russia party's dominance in Russia's tightly regulated political system. The Kremlin may view the outcome as proof of public support for Putin's policies, particularly in the ongoing conflict in Europe. 

The result will show that millions of people support our soldiers and share values, historical memory, and love for our homeland. A state TV ad promoting voting featured Russian military commanders descending down the ages, followed by soldiers hoisting the national flag after a victory in Ukraine, with the motto "Their voice is the voice of victory. Your vote is Russia's strength!" Before the vote, bone parts from a historical Russian ruler who defeated the Mongols were brought to the front in Ukraine to raise morale and support for victory. 

Anatoliy Simonenko, 76, voted in Moscow and said he was unconcerned about what might happen after the election despite officials' denials of a new mobilization wave. "Some projections are pessimistic, others hopeful. An outcome in the center is likely. War exists. The scenario includes costs, defense spending, and cuts to social programs. "Not avoiding it," he told Reuters. 

An anonymous voter questioned the reliability of computerized voting systems in certain regions, stating that results were easily manipulated. The electoral commission rejects such claims as baseless. Putin cast his electronic vote from his Kremlin office, according to state media. 

Anti-war party squeezed After the Supreme Court declared last month that the liberal Yabloko party, which favors a ceasefire in Ukraine, had violated electoral laws, most anti-war candidates were eliminated off the ballot before voting throughout Russia's 11 time zones. Some Yabloko candidates, which have often received minimal opinion poll support, are nonetheless running in constituencies that make up half of the lower house's 450 seats. Lev Shlosberg, a major Yabloko official, was imprisoned for 11 years for war-related comments before the referendum. In June, deputy leader Maxim Kruglov was imprisoned for seven years on similar accusations. Discrediting the army or propagating fake news can lead to severe prison sentences. 

Opinion polls indicate over 60% public support for peace talks, with the Kremlin expressing readiness to resume them. As forces advance into eastern Ukraine's Donetsk area, the government insists on full control of the territory and seeks a long-term deal, not a truce. Opinion polls reveal some Russians are more worried about the situation. As fuel shortages from Ukrainian drone strikes on oil refineries, high interest rates, labor shortages, and Western sanctions strain the economy, authorities may use the vote to assess society's war weariness. 

The Kremlin emphasizes national unity amid threats from Ukraine's security agencies and other enemies to incite instability in Russia. Initial and partial results should start filtering out at 1800 GMT on Sunday, with near-complete results on Monday.
