Saudi Arabia announced that its air defenses successfully intercepted a Houthi drone in proximity to Mecca, thwarting its entry into the city’s restricted airspace.

On Tuesday evening, Saudi Arabia’s air defenses successfully intercepted a drone in proximity to the holy city of Mecca. The Saudi-led military coalition has attributed the launch of the aircraft to Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement.

Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Malki stated that the drone was intercepted prior to entering the restricted airspace of Mecca, emphasizing that the security of the Islamic holy city is considered a "red line.

Al-Malki stated that the incident represented the second documented attempt by the Houthis to target Mecca, following a ballistic missile launch in 2017. He stated that the coalition would implement measures to prevent additional attacks.

Mecca stands as the holiest city in Islam and serves as the central destination for the annual Hajj pilgrimage, drawing millions of Muslims globally.

The Houthis, however, refuted claims of targeting Mecca or any other Islamic holy site. A military source from the Houthi group stated that they do not pose a threat to the city, while Mohammed al-Farah, a member of the Houthi political bureau, rejected Saudi Arabia’s claims as untrue, as reported by the Houthi-run SABA news agency.


The incident occurs during a time of heightened tensions between Houthi forces and Saudi Arabia, as the Houthis assert that they have carried out multiple attacks on Saudi territory in the past week. Saudi authorities have issued security alerts for Mecca and various regions of the kingdom.

The escalation has heightened broader worries regarding regional security and energy supplies. The Houthis hold authority over sections of Yemen’s Red Sea coastline adjacent to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a crucial international shipping lane, as interruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have resulted in a growing diversion of Saudi oil shipments.

Since 2015, Saudi Arabia has been at the forefront of a military coalition opposing the Houthis. Despite a decrease in fighting in recent years after a phase of diminished hostilities, tensions have escalated once more as Houthi forces engage with factions associated with Yemen’s internationally recognized government.

The renewed confrontation arises as Saudi Arabia pursues enhanced security support from the United States. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman engaged in a conversation with President Donald Trump last week regarding military assistance, which, as reported, has thus far been confined to intelligence support.
