ECB’s Lagarde Leaves Possibility Of Early Departure Open

ECB President Christine Lagarde has not ruled out the chance of stepping down before her term concludes in 2027, amid increasing speculation about her succession. Christine Lagarde European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has indicated that she may consider stepping down from her role prior to the conclusion of her term in October 2027. In an interview with Ireland’s national broadcaster RTE on Friday, Lagarde addressed ongoing speculation regarding her potential resignation prior to the conclusion of her mandate. 

“I will be departing in 2027,” Lagarde stated, addressing inquiries regarding her future at the ECB. When questioned about whether she was referring to October 2027, the conclusion of her current term, she responded, “We’ll see.” Lagarde also stated that she would manage any decision regarding the timing of her departure with professionalism. 

“At this point, I can assure you that, irrespective of the timing, this matter will be addressed with the utmost professionalism, as it rightfully deserves,” she stated. Speculation regarding Lagarde’s future has persisted throughout the year, with focus also shifting to possible candidates to take over her role as ECB president. Reuters reported that France would back Dutch central banker Klaas Knot as Lagarde’s successor in a possible arrangement that would result in a French candidate being appointed as the ECB’s chief economist. 

Lagarde’s current eight-year term as president of the ECB is set to conclude in October 2027.
