EU is set to enhance its investment in Greenland as Trump intensifies efforts for US control over the territory

The EU is set to enhance investment and strengthen its relationship with Greenland, while Donald Trump reiterates his efforts to assert US control over the territory.


European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is set to announce a boost in European Union investment in Greenland on Monday, as the bloc aims to strengthen its relationship with the Danish Arctic territory in light of President Donald Trump’s efforts to bring the island under US control.

Von der Leyen arrived in Greenland on Sunday for a two-day visit intended to showcase European backing for Greenland and Denmark, both of which have resolutely opposed Trump’s annexation campaign.

The visit occurs as the Arctic's geopolitical significance rises for the United States, Russia, China, and Europe. Melting ice is creating opportunities for new shipping routes and enhancing access to the region's mineral resources.

“The breathtaking landscapes and natural beauty of Greenland will remain etched in my memory for a long time.” “But so will the visible scars of climate change on the ice sheet,” von der Leyen posted on X following a boat trip through an ice-filled fjord.

“As the ice melts, a new reality emerges.”

Earlier this year, Trump escalated his calls for US control of Greenland, contending that Denmark, a fellow NATO ally, was unable to sufficiently defend the strategically significant island.

European officials have emphasized that NATO territory includes Greenland and that the alliance’s mutual defense commitment applies there. It has been noted that the United States possesses the authority to enhance its military presence in Greenland based on a longstanding defense agreement.


Tensions subsided following an agreement between Trump and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in Davos this January, where it was decided that the United States, Denmark, and Greenland would engage in discussions to address their differences, while NATO would enhance its involvement in Arctic security.

Nevertheless, the trilateral discussions have not yet resulted in a consensus. Trump emphasized his request for US control of Greenland during a NATO summit held in Turkey in July.

Denmark is a member of the EU; however, Greenland exited the bloc in 1985. Greenlanders, nonetheless, continue to be Danish citizens and, as a result, EU citizens.

The EU has consistently offered financial assistance to Greenland, especially through funding associated with fishing rights and education.

EU officials state that von der Leyen’s new package will greatly enhance funding and broaden the range of sectors eligible for European investment.

The initiative aims to enhance the EU’s economic and political involvement with Greenland as competition for the Arctic’s strategic significance, shipping routes, and natural resources grows stronger.
