Shaqiri of Switzerland has stepped down from the international football team

Following a 14-year tenure with the Swiss national team, former winger for Bayern Munich and Liverpool, Xherdan Shaqiri, announced his retirement from international football on Monday.

For Switzerland, Shaqiri has participated in 125 games and scored 32 goals. From the World Cup 2010 to the Euro 2024, he is the only player from Switzerland to have participated in seven major competitions.

The 32-year-old played in two matches as Switzerland lost in the quarterfinals of Euro 2024.

“14 years with the Swiss national team, seven tournaments, countless goals, and priceless moments.” It is now appropriate to bid farewell to the national team,” Shaqiri posted to Instagram. “Great memories remain and I say to you all, thank you.”

Shaqiri has been a player for the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer since 2022. He has won the Premier League with Liverpool, the Swiss and German divisions at FC Basel and Bayern, and the Swiss Open three times each.
