Colombian federation accuses Copa security of detaining its son and president

The Colombian football federation (FCF) apologized to the organizers following the chaotic circumstances inside the Hard Rock Stadium, but they nevertheless pointed the finger to private security during the Copa America final for the incident that resulted in the detention of their president and his son.

Following a fight at the stadium just after midnight, Miami police filed arrest charges for federation president Ramon Jeserun, 71, and his son Ramon Jamil, 43, charging both men with violence.

After engaging in combat with guards in a tunnel, Jeserun and his son were charged. According to the FCF, they were just attempting to attend the awards ceremony following Argentina’s victory against Colombia in Miami, but tighter security measures prohibited them from doing so.

“Employees of the private security of the stadium prevented timely and direct access to the field to most members of the Colombian delegation, despite being duly identified with the official badge of the organization,” the FCF stated in a statement.

Tensions were high when they were not allowed in, the FCF continued. Police said that after pulling the guard to the ground by the neck, Jeserun’s kid hit and kicked him in the head.

“Ramon Jesurun, driven by his paternal instinct… rushed to complain about what happened but ended up overwhelmed by the situation, as he was in the corridor with his wife, sons, daughters and minor grandchildren,” the FCF stated.

“We, the Colombian football governing body, are sorry for this incident and extend our condolences to the host nation, the individuals impacted, and the tournament organizers.

“For his part, president Jesurun deeply regrets these events, which should never have happened and which resulted in a paternal and instinctive move to protect his son and his family.”

Earlier, the police-initiated lockout that trapped hundreds of fans outside Florida’s Hard Rock Stadium caused the championship game to begin more than an hour late.

When multiple fans attempted to enter the stadium without tickets, dozens of them were arrested and more than fifty were ejected from the premises.

In the match that was postponed because of the pandemonium, Argentina defeated Colombia 1-0.
