A tornado ravages an eastern Chinese town, leaving five dead and dozens injured

Videos on social media showed a tornado in China uprooting trees, tearing off houses, and launching debris skyward.

The state-run Xinhua news agency said that a tornado ripped through an eastern Chinese village, leaving five people dead and nearly 100 injured.

Social media users posted videos of the storm uprooting trees, tearing off roofs, and launching debris skyward.

Severe convective weather was the cause of the tornado, according to the Dongming County Emergency Management Bureau. They claimed that emergency response procedures had been started and a command center established by the local authorities.

In Caiyuan, Shandong province, 2,820 dwellings were damaged by the tornado, according to Xinhua. According to the Emergency Management Bureau, emergency services are now handling site management and clean-up after disasters.

Tornadoes do occur in China, while being less often than in the US. Less than 100 tornadoes occur in China each year, and over the previous 50 years, at least 1,772 people have died as a result of tornadoes, according to researchers.

Chinese official media reported that a tornado devastated Guangzhou in southern China in April, leaving five people dead and 33 injured.

The China Meteorological Administration stated that 2023 was the warmest year since 1901 in its yearly report on climate change, which was published earlier this month. The country’s experiences with extreme weather and climate events are becoming more frequent and severe, according to the report.

At present, severe weather is plaguing several regions of China. While the southern regions are flooding as a result of heavy rains, the northern regions are suffering from a severe drought and record-breaking temperatures.
