Somalia’s capital was struck by flash floods

Devastating flash floods have turned the streets of Somalia’s capital city of Mogadishu into impassable waterways.

Concerns about safety were raised after residents told Reuters that the unexpected flood, which in some places reached knee height, seriously damaged infrastructure and caused major property damage.

Concerns regarding the effects of climate change have been raised by the city’s increasing frequency and intensity of these floods over time.

With increasingly erratic weather patterns throughout East Africa and the Horn of Africa, including Somalia, climate change has become a major worldwide concern.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) asserts that global warming has considerably increased the frequency of extreme weather events, such as droughts and floods, in these regions.

The effects of these calamities are exacerbated by these climate changes in addition to pre-existing issues like poverty and political instability.
