Armenia’s foreign ministry states that it acknowledges the statehood of Palestine
The latest nation to do so in spite of Israel’s resistance is Armenia, which on Friday announced its official recognition of a Palestinian state through its foreign ministry.
According to a ministry statement, Armenia backs a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and is in favor of a UN resolution calling for an immediate truce in Israel’s battle with Hamas in Gaza.
According to a statement from the ministry, Israel’s foreign ministry called the ambassador of Armenia “for a serious reprimand” after Armenia recognized the state of Palestine.
The Palestinian Authority, which is under Israeli military control in the West Bank but enjoys some degree of self-government, applauded Armenia’s move.
The presidency of the Authority said in a statement that “this recognition contributes positively to preserving the two-state solution, which faces systematic challenges, and promotes security, peace, and stability for all parties involved.”
Israel withdrew its ambassadors from Madrid, Dublin, and Oslo last month in response to the official recognition of a Palestinian state by a number of Western nations, including Norway, Spain, and Ireland.
