After opening fire on the magistrate in court, a Kenyan police officer was shot and killed

Following his wife’s bail denial, a Kenyan police officer opened fire on a magistrate in court, killing him.

A top Kenyan police officer was shot dead in a horrifying incident at a Nairobi magistrate court after he opened fire on Monica Kivuti, the Makadara Principal Magistrate. The event happened not long after the magistrate rendered a decision in a case that purportedly involved the officer’s spouse.

Chief Inspector Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto, the officer in charge of the police station in Londiani, Western Kenya, was said to have been furious that the court had decided to revoke his wife’s bail after she had run away. Kipruto shot and injured Magistrate Kivuti after becoming enraged and taking out a revolver on her.

“A person shot at the magistrate and injured her on the hip immediately after this decision was pronounced,” the judiciary stated in a statement.

Kipruto was instantly shot and killed by other courtroom officers who reacted quickly. Three additional officers were hurt in the turmoil that followed. The magistrate and the other injured persons are presently undergoing medical attention at the hospital.

Judge Kivuti “cancelled the bond for an accused person who had jumped bond and failed to offer satisfactory explanations for jumping bond,” the judiciary revealed. Kipruto fired after making this statement, wounding Kivuti in the hip. According to early accounts, Kipruto was wed to the defendant whose bail was revoked.

According to the national police agency, Kipruto was in court for “unknown reasons,” and inquiries are still being conducted to ascertain what exactly led up to the shooting.

Kenyans are startled by the episode because, despite the police’s past charges of involvement in extrajudicial executions, such an act of violence by a police officer has never happened inside of a courtroom.

The judiciary has made steps to strengthen security measures in reaction to the occurrence in order to guarantee the protection of court employees and patrons. Winfridah Mokaya, Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, sent her sympathies to the officer’s family and wished Magistrate Kivuti a swift recovery.

“We at the judiciary family hope our colleague gets well soon. In addition, we offer our sympathies to the family of the officer who was killed in this tragic event, Mokaya stated.

This tragic and horrific tragedy is still being investigated.
