EAC leaders convene to inaugurate Veronica Nduva as the new secretary general

The East African Community (EAC) heads of State have gathered for an extraordinary summit to select a new head of the Secretariat, who will take over from Peter Mathuki.

The summit is set to inaugurate Veronica Nduva as Kenya’s President William Ruto’s nominee for Secretary-General, following a leadership change prompted by the recall of Dr. Mathuki on March 8th.

He was nominated by President Ruto to serve as Kenya’s ambassador to Russia as part of foreign service changes.

State leaders will convene to address the recent development regarding the appointment of Zablon Muruka Mokua as a judge of the East African Court of Justice (EACJ). The decision to block his appointment was made by Kenya’s High Court, following a challenge by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) regarding his qualifications for the position.

The summit is happening during a challenging period for the regional bloc, as it is currently dealing with a funding crisis. This crisis has resulted in the delay of several programs within the bloc over the past few months, due to partner States not remitting approximately $40 million in dues.

Currently, Kenya is the only country that has successfully made its remittance payments to the bloc.
