The European Commission decided to raise the cost of a Schengen visa (visa type C) for short stays by 12% globally. The hike will take effect on June 11, 2024, globally.

The new Schengen visa costs, according to Slovenia’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, would be €90 for adults and €45 for youngsters six to under 12 years old.

A total of 105,926 Nigerian applicants requested for Schengen visas in 2023; 62,099 of those applications were granted, for an acceptance rate of roughly 58.61 percent.

Additionally, depending on the Council’s decision, nationals of nations that have not cooperated on the readmission of their citizens who have been irregularly residing in the EU will be required to pay a visa fee of either €135 or €180.

Though it is anticipated that the change will be published in the Official Journal by this week’s end, the European Union’s Commission has not yet announced the date of the hike.

The decision is made at a time when the European Union has disclosed that the number of visas granted in 2023 has climbed by 36.3% over 2022, although it is still lower than in 2019—when the Schengen nations received 16 million applications.

In 2023 Nigerians applied for Schengen visas at a cost of €8,474,080. According to SchengenNews, under the new cost structure, if the same number of persons apply, the total spending will increase by €1,059,260 to €9,533,340.
