A ship in Somalia is freed from suspected pirates by an EU anti-piracy mission

The commercial ship Basilisk, flying the flag of Liberia, was released from alleged pirates off the coast of Somalia on Friday, according to the European Union’s anti-piracy operation in the Indian and Red Seas. All 17 members of the crew were unharmed.

The EU Naval Force stated in a statement that the ship was attacked by suspected pirates on Thursday when it was going north, about 380 nautical miles east of Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.

The European Union said that after sent one of its Operation Atalanta warships to react earlier in the day, its forces boarded the Basilisk on Thursday night from a helicopter.

It stated that a male crew member hurt during the accused pirates’ attack is in stable condition and has received medical attention.

Between 2008 and 2018, Somali pirates produced mayhem in the waters off the lengthy coastline of the east African nation; but, until late last year, the pirate activity had been quiet until it began to ramp up again.
