Matip leaves his eight-year stay at Liverpool

Joel Matip, who will be leaving Liverpool this summer, called his time there “eight wonderful years.”

It was confirmed today that the central defender would leave the Reds when his contract expires at the end of this campaign.

Due to an unfortunate anterior cruciate ligament injury, Matip’s last appearance for Liverpool FC was in December. Despite this setback, he leaves having contributed to a time of immense success under Jürgen Klopp.

The No. 32, who was signed in 2016, made 201 appearances and won numerous significant trophies during his time at Anfield, including the Premier League and the Champions League in 2019.

Joel, thank you for everything. It’s time to say goodbye to Liverpool after eight years. Matip gave an explanation of the love and gratitude he and his family will carry with them as he thought back on his time spent on Merseyside.

“I’ve had eight amazing years in Liverpool,” he remarked.

“I was given the opportunity to be a part of an incredible history in an amazing club, with a fantastic coach and an incredible team. We have the world’s greatest fans and have won numerous accolades.

“I am really appreciative of the amazing time I had with these special individuals that support Liverpool FC and the supporters of the team.

From the beginning, my spouse and I have had a warm welcome and unwavering support, and we had an incredible time here with the kids.

“It will always hold a special place in our memories.”
