According to Alonso, Leverkusen is poised to become the first side to play a flawless Bundesliga season

To etch their names in German history, Bayer Leverkusen and Xabi Alonso need to win only one more Bundesliga match.

After Bayer Leverkusen’s 5-0 thumping of Bochum on Sunday, coach Xabi Alonso declared that his squad was prepared to become the first in Bundesliga history to finish the full season undefeated.

Treble-chasing Felix Passlack was sent off for Bochum in the 15th minute, but Leverkusen easily defeated them to extend their incredible unbeaten streak this season to 50 games in all competitions.

With a 2-2 draw against Roma on Thursday, Alonso’s squad advanced to the Europa League final, surpassing Benfica’s historic European undefeated record, which was set from 1963 to 1965.

With their victory over Bochum on Sunday, they also made Bundesliga history by being the third team to win all of their road games within a season.

“We played a totally different game after that red card,” Alonso said at a press conference.

“I am rather happy with the outcome. For us, it was crucial. We now have an incredible task to win the championship without losing on Saturday. That has never occurred previously.”

In Saturday’s Bundesliga finale, Leverkusen, who will also win their first-ever league trophy, will host Augsburg. Later in May, Leverkusen will play host to Kaiserslautern in the DFB-Pokal final and take on Atalanta in the Europa League showpiece match.

“To receive the title in Leverkusen will be very special,” Alonso stated. “It will be very special for the players because they have been focused the entire season.” They have my admiration.”
