Overnight, pro-Palestinian demonstrators take over an Amsterdam university
Wednesday saw the occupation of a University of Amsterdam (UvA) location by pro-Palestinian demonstrators. The previous day, police had clashed with demonstrators in the Dutch capital and dismantled a prior encampment at the university.
In contrast to early on Tuesday, when riot police used a bulldozer to tear down barriers at UvA and jail 169 individuals at a different site, police maintained that the university had not requested that they end the protest.
Just after midnight, UvA released a statement stating that it has “caused considerable damage” to its buildings and that it would like to work with the students who have been protesting since Monday to find a solution.
Because to the blockades, the university will keep many facilities closed on Wednesday. Students have demonstrated against the university’s academic relations with Israel and denounced its response. Violent altercations between pro- and anti-Palestinian demonstrators were captured on camera, and UvA has accused certain protesters of intimidating behavior.
According to a statement from the police, a pro-Palestinian rally at the University of Utrecht library was put to an end by local police, some 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Amsterdam.
