H.E.R. and Oprah Are Creating a New Film Inspired by HBCUs

H.E.R. is doing a new film at 20th Century Studios that is based on an HBCU, which is a step forward into the Hollywood scene. For this significant project, she is collaborating with Oprah Winfrey and Scott Sanders, the producers of “The Color Purple.”

The famous actress, who starred in, developed, and produced “The Color Purple” as “Squeak” last year, will be participating in this new film’s development and production.

The narrative centers on a Los Angeles ballet dancer who, against her parents’ desires, suspends her dance career to attend college. As she attempts to lead her faltering HBCU majorette team back to success, she must deal with rivalries and culture shock.

After working with Winfrey and Sanders on “The Color Purple,” H.E.R. proposed the idea to them, drawing inspiration from the majorettes’ impact on Black culture.

The screenplay for this thrilling dance film, which is set at a fictional HBCU in Atlanta, will be written by Lauren Ashley Smith, who is well-known for her work on “A Black Lady Sketch Show.”

H.E.R., Winfrey’s Harpo Films, and Sanders’s Scott Sanders Productions are all involved in the project. Alongside H.E.R., Carla Gardini and Mara Jacobs are also producing.

The goal, reportedly, is to present a joyful, lighthearted portrait of real HBCU life via the eyes of a majorette coming into her own. Marching band, dancing, and gymnastics are all combined in majorette traditions, which have grown to be an important aspect of Black and college society.

As a singer-songwriter, H.E.R. has become more well-known, receiving both nominations and victories for Grammys. Her song “Fight for You,” which was included in “Judas and the Black Messiah,” took home two awards: an Oscar and a Grammy.

Mary “Squeak” Agnes received numerous award nominations and contributed to The Color Purple’s success as a vocalist and lyricist.
