As a truck tries to cross a flooded river, floods wash it away, leaving eight confirmed dead

Following a truck’s plunge into the swollen Muswii River, eight remains have been recovered.

Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili of Makueni confirmed the event and stated that approximately ten individuals were unaccounted for, with the search continuing underway.

Mulili mentioned that the Kenya Red Cross and the Makueni County Department of Disaster Management are conducting search operations. In the event that someone sees a body floating in the river, she asked the nearby towns to report it.

After being saved alive, seven persons were taken to the hospital.

In an attempt to cross the flooded river, a group of people, including the deceased, hopped onto a truck transporting building materials, according to eyewitnesses.

The truck was driven across what looked to be a small stretch that was overflowing with flood waters during the disastrous operation.

Numerous individuals who were marooned on one bank of the river due to floods leaped onto the vehicle.

The truck appeared to slip into the deep end and overturn, leaving its occupants powerless, and things went south very quickly.

A throng is seen helplessly watching as several are carried away by the roaring flood waters, while others are seen running along the river in an attempt to save those who are being washed away by the torrent.

Numerous fatalities and the loss of property have resulted from the widespread reports of severe rainfall around the nation.

Kenya Met predicts that regions in the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Highlands to the west and east of the Rift Valley, and Nairobi may have intense rainfall—more than 40 mm in a 24-hour period.

Nairobi is among the areas of the country for which the Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall advisory due to the possibility of more severe flooding on April 25–28, 2024.
