Huge Demonstrations in Argentina Regarding the Suggested Reduction in University Funding

Large-scale demonstrations over planned cuts to university financing and calls for the preservation of education budgets erupted in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

On Tuesday, tens of thousands of protesters poured into the streets of Buenos Aires to voice their opposition to planned cuts to financing for public universities in Argentina.

Images from the colorful demonstration showed a throng of people walking, performing energetic dances and songs, and waving banners to support the preservation of school funding.

The main cause of the protest is the policy direction that President Javier Milei of Argentina has set out. He took office last year with the intention of completely overhauling the country’s finances, mainly by making significant cuts to the public sector.

In the face of strong opposition, Milei’s administration has kept university financing at 2023 levels while ignoring the substantial devaluation of the budget resulting from unchecked inflation, which is estimated to have decreased by as much as 80%.

The esteemed University of Buenos Aires’ rector, Ricardo Gelpi, issued a dire warning, threatening to close the school in as little as three months if necessary funding was not provided. The imminent danger of closure has inspired residents, instructors, and students equally, sparking enormous indignation and unity throughout Argentina.

President Milei has frequently referred to state-run institutions as socialist indoctrination centers in an attempt to defend the cuts.
