Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Agrees to Oppose Potential Sanctions on Israeli Military Assets
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vehemently opposed any fines imposed on IDF units and emphasized his will to oppose them.
Amid rumors that Washington is thinking of imposing sanctions on Israeli military forces, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to oppose them.
Tensions between the two allies have increased due to the potential penalties, which target Israel’s Netzah Yehuda unit, which is active in the occupied West Bank.
Concern was expressed by Israeli officials when rumors on Saturday arose suggesting that the US was about to sanction the Netzah Yehuda battalion.
The Israeli military, however, said that it was unaware of any such actions.
The action follows the US announcement of penalties against Israeli settlers in the West Bank, a symptom of mounting dissatisfaction with Netanyahu’s administration given its reliance on settlement parties.
“If anyone thinks they can impose sanctions on a unit of the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) – I will fight it with all my strength,” Netanyahu said in response to the prospect of penalties.
Former head of the Israeli armed forces Benny Gantz, a minister in the war cabinet, has also voiced his opposition to the penalties. He emphasized Israel’s devotion to international law and said that such measures would damage Israel’s legitimacy during a confrontation.
Gantz spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken about the rising hostilities and his desire for the sanctions to be reevaluated.
Sanctions, however, were not mentioned in the U.S. State Department’s remarks on the subject.
Blinken recently made decisions about claims that Israeli armed forces violated human rights. U.S. authorities are looking into these claims, which first came to light prior to confrontations between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
The majority of the cases under investigation took place in the West Bank, where persistent conflicts over land and sovereignty have led to an increase in violence in recent years. The Netzah Yehuda battalion is said by the Israeli military to function in compliance with international law.
The Israeli military has reaffirmed its commitment to thoroughly examining any charges of misbehavior, even in light of the uncertainties surrounding possible punishment.
