‘Mortuaries are overcrowded,’ extreme heat kills more than 100 Mali

According to accounts, Mali experienced extremely high temperatures last month, which resulted in the deaths of over 100 individuals.

The town of Kayes in the southwest saw a peak temperature of 48.5°C last week.

Meteorologists cited by internet news site RFI claim that April will be the hottest day on record for Africa.

According to the French RFI news website, 102 heat-stricken patients who arrived to the capital’s Gabriel-Toure Hospital in Bamako passed away immediately.

The majority of them were seriously ill and older than sixty. The hospital’s head of anesthesia, Djibo Mahamane Django, told Joliba FM, a local radio station

Over 250 people were killed in three days, according to some sources.

Owner of the morgues, Ladji Dibatéré, was cited as stating, “We have seen an increase in the number of deaths and the morgues are more full.”

Families are compelled, according to Mr. Dibatéré, to keep their relatives’ bodies at home.

Mali’s state-owned ORTM television station claimed that officials have advised citizens to confine students and stay in well-ventilated areas since the elderly and young are the most susceptible.

To safeguard elementary school children from the intense heat, the school day has been reduced and modified by the authorities.

El Nino weather, which has raised the temperature of the oceans and atmosphere, has been blamed for the high temperatures.

The military government of Mali has not yet responded to the increasing temperatures.
