Guinea: Military regime closes bank accounts of government officials

The military regime in Guinea has ordered the confiscation of bank accounts and the confiscation of passports of members of the government after dissolving the government for reasons that are not yet known.

July 2022.

They have decided to freeze the accounts of members of the government, take all their travel documents, as well as all work vehicles, and cheat their guards and their assistants, reveals a statement read on Monday evening on state television by General Ibrahima Sory Bangoura, the head of the army, in front of twenty other soldiers.

No explanation has been made public for these measures, nor for the dissolution of the government. The rulers of Guinea, like those who have manifested themselves in several West African countries since 2020, have made the fight against corruption one of their watchwords.

Tensions were recently reported among members of the government. The capital of Conakry was hit by protests at the beginning of February, a period of protests that were rare under the military regime, which banned any demonstrations. It suppressed the opposition, which was largely weakened by impotence. The country has been facing severe internet access restrictions for several weeks. The military regime has attacked several media outlets.
