Some citizens criticize the statue unveiled in honor of Nyerere
Some Tanzanian citizens, through social media, have criticized the new statue unveiled in honor of former president Julius Nyerere, claiming it does not resemble him.
The statue was unveiled on Sunday, outside the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Several leaders attended the launch.
Nyerere was the first president of the nation since it gained its independence in 1961 until 1985. He is remembered for fighting for the rights of African citizens and even hosting some leaders who were fighting for the freedom of their countries, including South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique.
Last year, a statue unveiled in honor of the former president of Zambia, Kenneth Kaunda, was removed after it was criticized by citizens in the country that it did not resemble Kaunda.
