Merz of Germany Reaffirms Diplomatic Offer to Iran Despite Weakening Regime

The Chancellor of Germany has reiterated that the EU is prepared to offer diplomatic support should Iran’s weakening leadership request new negotiations.

Despite the latest Israeli attacks, which he claims have severely undermined the Iranian leadership, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has reiterated Europe’s willingness to back new diplomatic initiatives with Iran.

During Tuesday’s G7 conference in Canada, Merz told broadcaster Welt that Tehran’s leadership has taken a severe hit and might not recover its previous power. The future of the nation is unknown because this dictatorship is severely damaged and is unlikely to regain its previous level of power. He answered, “We’ll have to wait and see.”

Merz emphasized that despite the uncertainties, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom are still prepared to provide diplomatic support should circumstances change and communication resume.

Referring to the timeframe of the recent Israeli strikes, Merz stated, “If a new situation were to arise, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom would again be prepared to provide diplomatic assistance, as they were until last Thursday.”

His comments coincide with rising regional tensions and concerns about the internal stability of Iran. Merz’s remarks indicate Europe’s ongoing openness to constructive engagement—even with a weaker adversary—even though the future of the negotiations is still uncertain.
