The Knicks want to speak with Jason Kidd, the coach of the Mavericks
NBA insider Marc Stein said Friday that the New York Knicks intend to formally request permission to interview Jason Kidd, the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, for their coaching position.
The Knicks made it to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years, but on Tuesday they dismissed head coach Tom Thibodeau.
The 52-year-old Kidd has four seasons with the Mavericks, going 179-149 (.546), including 39-43 in 2024–25. Despite falling to the Boston Celtics in five games, he led Dallas to the 2024 NBA Finals.
Kidd has a 362-339 (.516) overall record as a head coach, having worked with the Mavericks, Milwaukee Bucks, and Brooklyn Nets from 2013 to 2014. He served as the Los Angeles Lakers’ assistant coach from 2019 to 21.
Kidd was a Hall of Fame point guard who spent 2012–13, his 19th and last season, with New York. The Knicks (54-28) fell in the Eastern Conference playoffs but won the Atlantic Division that year.
In his five seasons with the Knicks, Thibodeau finished 51-31 this season and finished 226-174 (.565). In the playoffs with New York, he finished 24-23.
