Miley Cyrus discloses that her vocal cord has a large polyp
Miley Cyrus is “not willing” to have the “very large polyp” on her vocal cord removed in case it alters her voice.
The “Flowers” hitmaker explained that her unique low-pitched voice is partially caused by both growth and Reinke’s Edema, which is swelling of the vocal folds brought on by fluid buildup. Although the conditions make it “extremely difficult” for her to perform, she doesn’t want surgery in case it changes her voice.
Speaking on “The Zane Lowe Show” on Apple Music 1, she stated: “I got Reinke’s Edema, which is a condition known as vocal cord abuse. Additionally, it doesn’t help to be 21 and stay up drinking, smoking, and partying after every show. However, it doesn’t cause it in my situation either. Thus, this is how my voice always sounded.
It’s a feature of my distinct physique; this is how I appear. I have a huge polyp on my vocal cord that has contributed to a lot of my tone and texture, but it’s really hard to play with since it’s like running a marathon while wearing ankle weights. So sometimes, even when I’m speaking, when I call my mother at the end of the day, she says, “Oh, you sound like you’re talking through a radio.” And it produces the ultimate voice fry, which is how you know I’m exhausted.
My voice is quite distinctive because of it, but I also have Reinke’s Edema and a big polyp on my cords, which I don’t want to cut because there’s a potential that I won’t sound like myself when I wake up from surgery. I’m pretty conflicted about it.
Along with recalling the “pretty traumatic” period she experienced following a ruptured ovarian cyst, the 32-year-old diva fought through the pain to continue filming her 2023 TV special, “Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party,” with her godmother Dolly Parton.
