SAFA condemns “malicious and false.” Jordaan asserts
The South African Football Association has refuted allegations that it transferred R10 million from Association funds to its current president, Danny Jordaan, without the NEC’s consent or knowledge.
In a statement posted on its official website on May 11, SAFA attacked individuals spreading what it refers to as “disinformation,” alleging that its financial system was illegally accessed and that the accusations of corruption are part of a coup effort to replace the organization’s leadership.
The statement reads, “The President was paid more than R10 million from the Association in 2020 without the knowledge and approval of the NEC, continuing the disinformation and concerted attempt to effect regime change at the South African Football Association (SAFA).”
“To be honest, these accusations are ludicrous, spiteful, and vicious. It is unthinkable that the source of this most recent disinformation comes from someone who unlawfully accessed the SAFA financial system, misread the reports they produced, and then distributed them to other parties in an attempt to spread this untrue story. Dr. Danny Jordaan held a number of positions in SAFA, including CEO until 2008, CEO of the World Cup Bid until 2006, and CEO of the FIFA World Cup from 2006 to 2011, according to the illegally obtained report, which covers all payments made to the President since 2007.
“It also covers SAFA honoraria and meeting allowances, which were given to all NEC members for more than 13 years.”
Since taking over as CEO in 1997, Jordaan has been employed by SAFA in a variety of roles.
In the statement, SAFA criticized a national Sunday news outlet for maintaining a power grab within SAFA and failing to present the complete narrative or include the Association’s viewpoint and justifications.
Last but not least, this is a component of the continuous effort to overthrow the SAFA President. It is not surprising that the journalist purposefully ignored our whole response after we gave this explanation to the Sunday publication that still spreads false information.
