Trump affirms respect for constitutional limits and denies interest in a third term
Trump has ruled out a third term, reiterating the two-term limit despite rumors stoked by his previous statements and “Trump 2028” memorabilia.
US President Donald Trump has brushed off rumors that he would run for a third term, reiterating his intention to fulfill the two terms that the US Constitution permits.
“I will serve two terms as president, each lasting eight years. Trump stated, “I always thought that was very important,” during an interview with Kristen Welker, host of NBC’s Meet the Press, which aired on Sunday. Days after Trump celebrated the first 100 days of his second term in office, he was interviewed on Friday at his home in Florida.
The 78-year-old president attempted to put an end to mounting rumors after his previous remarks and the sale of “Trump 2028” hats by his business, The Trump Organization, raised concerns about his long-term political goals. Trump has already hinted that he might be able to serve a third or even fourth term, whether in jest or otherwise. He subsequently asserted that his remarks were intended to incite the press.
While acknowledging that he had received “many requests” from supporters urging him to serve past 2029, Trump made it clear that he had no intention of doing so. According to him, “To the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do it,” recognizing that the US Constitution does not allow for a third term.
“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice,” the United States Constitution’s 22nd Amendment, which was enacted in 1951, makes explicit. It would need to be ratified by three-quarters of state legislatures and approved by a supermajority in Congress in order to be amended.
Though none have been put to the test in court, some Trump supporters have nonetheless identified potential flaws. Trump merely said that “many people have said different things” when asked if anyone had brought such thoughts to his attention.
The US economy just shrank for the first time since 2022 as a result of the most recent round of tariffs imposed under Trump’s trade policy; Trump also discussed these worries during the interview. He dismissed criticism, saying, “This is a time of transition. I am confident that we will achieve great success.
While acknowledging uncertainty, Trump maintained his optimism when asked if the economic downturn will continue, saying, “Anything can happen.” But in my opinion, our economy will be the best in our nation’s history. Additionally, he suggested that tariffs might be made permanent, claiming that this would entice businesses to invest in the United States.
Asked if the prolonged trade war might result in fewer consumer items being available, Trump played down the possibility. “They don’t have to have thirty dolls. Three are possible for them. They don’t require 250 pencils. They’re allowed to have five,” he replied.
Despite denying himself a third term, Trump nominated a number of possible Republican Party successors, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance.
