Air Peace suspends all flights throughout Nigeria due to the NiMet strike due to safety concerns

Air Peace has halted flights across the country, stating that “flight safety cannot be guaranteed” amid the NiMet strike.

Air Peace has declared the immediate halt of all its flight operations throughout Nigeria due to a current strike by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

On Wednesday, the airline issued a statement indicating that the decision was made to prioritize passenger safety, emphasizing the importance of NiMet’s weather updates, especially the Current Nowcast of Hazardous Weather (CNH) reports, for ensuring safe flight landings during the rainy season.

The airline emphasized that the lack of CNH reports from control towers presents significant risks to aviation safety, particularly during frequent thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.

The statement announced, “We regret to inform you that, due to the ongoing strike by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Air Peace is suspending all flight operations nationwide with immediate effect.”

This decision is essential as NiMet is the agency tasked with issuing CNH (Current Nowcast of Hazardous Weather) reports, which are vital for ensuring safe landings, particularly during this period of intense rainfall and thunderstorms. Flight safety cannot be ensured without these reports from the control tower.

“In our commitment to safety, we have made the responsible decision to suspend operations until NiMet is able to resume full service.”

“We recognize that this may lead to some inconvenience, and we truly apologize.” Passengers will receive updates and options for rescheduling.

NiMet, essential for delivering real-time weather data to enhance aviation safety, initiated its industrial action earlier this week, causing disruptions to vital meteorological services at airports across the country.

Air Peace has called on passengers to exercise patience and understanding, while reaffirming its dedication to prioritizing lives and safety above all else.
