US Reduces Ukraine Aid Projection To $100 Billion Amid Minerals Deal Negotiations, According To Bloomberg
As Trump looks for a minerals deal to recoup military costs, the US reduced its aid estimate for Ukraine to $100 billion, according to Bloomberg News.
According to Bloomberg News, which cited people with knowledge of the situation, the United States has drastically reduced its estimate of help given to Ukraine since Russia’s 2022 invasion, from $300 billion to roughly $100 billion.
The revised amount coincides with former President Donald Trump’s efforts to negotiate a bilateral minerals agreement with Ukraine, which is being presented as a way to recover money spent on military aid to Kyiv as well as a component of a larger peace initiative to end the conflict.
Trump has expressed reservations about the enormous amounts allocated to Ukraine’s defense, despite the fact that the aid was not set up as a loan. He views the possible mining collaboration as a means of balancing the ledger.
Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the president of Ukraine, called the recent talks with the United States about the minerals deal “positive” and said more meetings were anticipated. Media questions about the negotiations have not received a response from the White House.
The Trump administration put forth a revised and expanded minerals pact last month. The agreement would oblige Kyiv to deposit all proceeds from the exploitation of natural resources, whether by state-run or private enterprises, into a joint US-Ukraine investment fund, but it would not provide explicit security assurances for Ukraine.
The proposed agreement, which seeks to take use of Ukraine’s abundant rare earth and other resource reserves, reflects changing US policy priorities in the area. Additionally, it marks a shift toward more economically motivated diplomacy, despite Ukraine’s ongoing need for humanitarian and military assistance in its fight against Russian aggression.
The parameters of the possible minerals deal, as well as how they might affect Ukraine’s sovereignty over its natural resources, are still up for debate and are sure to come under scrutiny both at home and abroad.
