Authorities report that former LSU star Kyren Lacy died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound
Additional information regarding the passing of Kyren Lacy, a former standout student at Louisiana State University, has surfaced.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office reported on Sunday that the 24-year-old passed away during a police pursuit in Texas from what seemed to be a “self-inflicted gunshot wound.” Lacy and a family member were involved in a weapons disturbance on Saturday night, and authorities arrived. Before police could arrive, Lacy shot a gun into the ground and fled, according to a release.
After locating Lacy’s car and attempting a traffic stop, deputies said, “Lacy then ran away, and a vehicle pursuit took place over a number of miles. The suspicious car collided. Officers “discovered he had suffered what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound” when they attempted to apprehend him. He was declared deceased at the site by EMS.
“According to preliminary information, Lacy shot himself during the pursuit and before the vehicle crashed,” the statement read. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences will do an autopsy.
After allegedly causing a crash in December that claimed the life of 78-year-old Herman Hall, Lacy was charged in January with reckless driving, felony hit-and-run, and negligent murder. Lacy entered a no-passing zone, drove a 2023 Dodge Charger “recklessly,” and passed cars at a “high rate of speed,” according to the police, which resulted in a head-on collision.
Two days after the deadly crash, Lacy blogged about registering for the 2025 NFL Draft. He was not a part of LSU’s December 31 bowl victory.
“Kyren Lacy, a former student-athlete for LSU Football, passed away tragically,” LSU stated.
