Davies of Bayern has an ACL tear, and Upamecano is out due to a knee ailment
Alphonso Davies, a defender for Bayern Munich, will be sidelined for a considerable amount of time after tearing his right ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) while playing for Canada on international duty, the Bundesliga team announced on Wednesday.
In the 12th minute of Canada’s 2-1 victory over the US in Sunday’s Concacaf Nations League third-place playoff match, Davies was substituted out. The remainder of the season will be missed by the 24-year-old left defender.
Max Eberl, director of sport at Bayern, said in a statement, “Unfortunately, there’s always the risk that players will return injured — this time it’s hit us particularly hard.”
Dayot Upamecano, a defender for Bayern, has also been sidelined for several weeks due to a knee injury, the club announced. The 26-year-old France international was diagnosed with loose joints in his left knee. This is another setback for Bayern’s defense.
“Dayot Upamecano and Alphonso Davies’ absences are a serious setback for Bayern. On his journey back, Phonzy will receive all the assistance he requires. In the upcoming weeks, we will also keep a careful eye on Upa and anticipate his next availability. We have a great team that will make up for these absences,” Eberl continued.
Second-place Bayer Leverkusen is six points behind league leaders Bayern. Vincent Kompany’s team will play the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal against Serie A leaders Inter Milan on April 8 after hosting St Pauli in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
