Ronaldo claims that Portugal is at a stressful time before their match against Denmark
Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal’s captain, recognized the burden on his team as they attempt to overcome a 1-0 lead against Denmark in the second leg of their quarterfinal Nations League match on Sunday.
In the first leg in Copenhagen, when Portugal lost to a goal from Rasmus Hojlund, the Al-Nassr striker was very critical of his own and his team’s performance. However, he is optimistic that the home crowd can be crucial in changing the outcome of the match.
Tension is higher in the air. I’m not keeping it a secret. “The beautiful thing about football is that we’re in a tense moment because we need to win,” Ronaldo told reporters on Saturday.
“The fans are invited to join us tomorrow. Allow them to offer us their strength, as we will make every effort.
“I have lost games in the first half, but I have never lost in the first leg. On terrible days, there are games like that. The other day, neither the team nor I played at all, but that’s just a fact of life.
“I want to walk out of Alvalade Stadium tomorrow with a proud smile. I’ll be pleased if I score, but if I don’t, let someone else score; I want Portugal to win.”
Ronaldo was sure they could come together and get to the semi-finals, and he disagreed that the team lacked mentality.
“The national team is constantly displaying attitude. Technical parts were obviously weak, but there were other problems as well. You can’t play good all the time in football,” he stated.
Additionally, the atmosphere wasn’t conducive. Together with the squad, I have played 50,000 awful games. Our players have also played poorly, even though they are accustomed to performing on large venues. That’s a component of it.
“You shouldn’t be anxious. The past will always be the past. Although many people want us to lose, I’m confident that tomorrow will be a fantastic outcome if the few individuals present are cohesive and positive.
Moreover, Ronaldo stood up for coach Roberto Martinez, who has come under fire from several commentators and supporters.
“I think it’s unfair to criticize the coach, because we’re all in the same boat,” the 40-year-old state.
“We had a poor game and lost, but tomorrow is the second leg. Take it easy. Be optimistic and believe that everything will work out.
