Lizzo Talks About Fighting Suicidal Thoughts And Depression During Sexual Harassment Allegations
Lizzo struggled with severe despair and contemplated suicide when she was sued for sexual harassment in 2023.
Several of her former background dancers filed numerous lawsuits against the 36-year-old singer, whose true name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, in 2023, claiming the singer had harassed them sexually.
During a performance at the Wiltern Theater, Lizzo gave fans an emotional update on her mental health through a video that was captured by a concertgoer.
She said in video posted by a fan on X that the litigation left her feeling so “deeply hurt” that she “didn’t want to live anymore.”
“I called my album ‘Love in Real Life’ because I was in a really bad, deep depression about a year and a half ago, which is really difficult for me to talk about,” she continued.
“The world was so heartbreaking and hurting that I didn’t want to live any longer, and I was so terrified of people that I didn’t want to be seen.” I eventually conquered that phobia.
“As I was walking through the crowd to get to my spot, something miraculous happened,” Lizzo added, recalling how a fan’s words helped her change her viewpoint. A stranger turned to face me and said, “Lizzo, you have my love.” We hugged, and it felt so good. They reached out, and I returned the favor.
Described as “f*** lifesaving,” she continued, “I was like, ‘Damn, you can’t get this s on the Internet, buddy,’ after that encounter.
“You can only find this kind of love in real life.”
The vocalist stated that she wanted to share her tale with anyone who was struggling with “depression, or darkness, or felt so betrayed by someone they trusted or was lied on and hated on for those lies.”
Lizzo called the dancers’ accusations against her “outrageous” and “unbelievable,” and she refuted them.
A second lawsuit alleging racial and sexual harassment was filed in September by Asha Daniels, a former stylist for Lizzo’s “Big Grrrl Big Tour,” following the first ones, in which six more dancers came out with identical claims.
According to reports in December 2024, Asha’s claim was dismissed.
Lizzo will keep fighting the “false” accusations, a source close to the musician told The New York Post.
“Lizzo is fighting long after most public figures would have settled because these accusations are untrue and cannot be allowed to stand,” they continued.
“Until all these baseless accusations are refuted, she will not give up.”
Lizzo is still dealing with a number of pending cases from former workers who allege a hostile workplace and sexual and racial discrimination.
According to her, the accusations made against her are false.
