T-Mobile customers may be eligible for settlements of up to $25,000 due to a data breach
T-Mobile is set to allocate $350 million to customers affected by its 2021 data breach, which exposed the personal information of around 76 million individuals.
What occurred?
The breach was carried out by American hacker John Binns while in Turkey, as he took advantage of a misconfigured internet-exposed router to gain entry into T-Mobile’s internal network. The attack resulted in the exposure of sensitive data, such as names, Social Security numbers, and birth dates.
Who Qualifies for Payment?
Eligible recipients are required to have submitted a claim by the deadline of January 23, 2023.
Claimants are required to have been T-Mobile customers during the data breach that occurred on August 16, 2021, and must have had their information compromised.
To obtain the full payout of $25,000, claimants needed to provide documentation that verified out-of-pocket expenses associated with the breach, including costs for credit monitoring or fraud-related expenses.
Individuals lacking documentation may still qualify for a reduced payment of $25, or $100 if they reside in California.
T-Mobile chose to resolve the class action lawsuit through a settlement instead of contesting it in court. Payouts are set to commence in April 2025, as indicated in an update on the T-Mobile Data Breach Settlement website.
Eligible customers who have already submitted claims do not need to take any further action.
