Trump announces a FIFA task force and says that trade disputes with Mexico and Canada will make the 2026 World Cup “more exciting”
Trump thinks that the fuss over taxes with Canada and Mexico will make the World Cup more interesting in some way.
By executive order on Friday, Trump set up the FIFA 2026 World Cup task force. He said that the event would “showcase the Nation’s pride and hospitality while promoting economic growth and tourism through sport.”
The World Cup will have 104 games in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This is the first time in more than 20 years that the event will be held in more than one country. All three countries are in a tariff war, and Trump thinks that the political situation will only make the event more popular.
In the Oval Office, he told reporters, “Tense is good.” “It gets a lot more exciting.”
Trump, who is planning to go to some games, will co-chair the task force with J.D. Vance, and other important Cabinet members will also be there. The White House thinks that the event will bring in up to $480 million for host towns and create 40,000 jobs.
At the signing of the executive order, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the U.S. has a chance to win and showed off the prize for the 2025 Club World Cup. Along with that, he made history by calling the first-ever FIFA World Cup halftime show.
I can report that the first-ever half-time show at a FIFA World Cup final will take place in New York, New Jersey, with the help of Global Citizen, Infantino wrote on Instagram. Coldplay will help choose the artists.
“Celebrations will be held in Times Square over the last weekend,” he said, promising a “incredible” event.
