Lady Gaga Returns With Her New Album To “Gothic Dreams”
Lady Gaga’s latest album was a “return to those Gothic dreams” of her early songs.
With the release of her seventh album, “Mayhem,” the 38-year-old singer revealed that she felt a “really powerful” draw back towards the dark energy of her first two albums, “The Fame Monster” and “Born This Way,” but she also feels that her most recent songs have set “new ground.”
She said, “It was really powerful,” to Rolling Stone magazine. This was a return to those Gothic dreams, even though I may have strayed from that in the last four or so albums I’ve released and experimented with other things. I wanted to create new ground while navigating ancient territory, which is something I believe is challenging. Some people may think, “Oh, that reminds me of this,” because, although I do have a style, I tried to push myself musically to a new level in a few of the album’s moments.
The hitmaker of “Telephone” thinks the album embodies both turmoil and resiliency.
“Mayhem,” she clarified, “is ultimately about both chaos and resilience.” We must have the fortitude to endure chaos. It is therefore both. I do believe that, compared to some of my other albums, I sonically explored bitterness more on this one.
Among the individual songs on the album, Gaga named “Killah” as one of her favorites because, although being so different from her previous work, it is still a “confident” song.
“I really adore the production on it,” she stated. It’s a lot of fun, and the guitar is the only live instrument on the entire record. It has such assurance. However, it had a vibe and groove that I had never worked on before.
The fact is that I don’t always feel so confident. I admit that I occasionally have extreme insecurity, but overall, I feel very confident.
And that’s a part of the “Mayhem” adventure as a single night out. It’s like that one night when you’re feeling your finest, if you think of the album as a single night.
